A Mission to Help Youths Make More Informed Decisions

As part of skills-based volunteering, CAS volunteer Sarah organised a financial literacy workshop at Melrose Home, where she engaged youths in an “auction-style” game to envision their dream lives. Sarah, a financial consultant and former social worker, used her understanding of challenges faced by these youths to offer valuable insights.

Throughout the workshop, she covered budgeting, investing, taxes, credit card debt, and buy-now-pay-later schemes. The youths, aged 17 to 19, shared their worries about independence and financial support. Sarah encouraged them not to limit themselves to part-time jobs and suggested exploring education and full-time roles with CPF benefits for long-term stability.

The workshop’s reception was positive, and Sarah plans to conduct more sessions in the future, hoping to explore the psychology behind the youths’ spending habits.
